While in the midst of creating projects for on line or print publication, I find myself daydreaming of all the things I can do with leftover bits and pieces of fabric scraps that will be leftover...
I have posted a few times about using fabric and paper scraps to create new projects such as using patterned papers to make cool home decor projects or using patterned paper and cardstock scraps to create all sorts of things including Christmas ornaments.
Having created this fun bunting ribbon sometime ago using bits and pieces of fabric scraps along with muslin hand dyed with Rit, I set out to create some coordinating tags that could be used for gift wraps, etc. Supplies are minimal, here is what you need;
Supplies needed;
- Fabric scraps in coordinating patterns and colors
- The Warm Co Lite Steam a Seam
- plain manilla tags (purchase at an Office Supply store- I used 2 1/2" x 5" tags but use any size you want)
- jute- for hanger
- StazOn ink in black and stamp in sentiment of choice
- Scissors, pencil, iron and pressing surface, cardstock scrap, sewing machine and thread
Once you have fused the webbing to your fabrics, create a small triangle template from the cardstock that you can use to trace over and over again with the pencil on the paper side of the fused fabrics. This way, your flags will always be the same size.
Trace and then cut all of them out with the scissors. The number of flags you make will depend on the number of tags you want to make. You need five flags per tag.
Arrange your flags on the tag and peel away the paper backing.
Use the iron to press the flags in place. Cut away any edges of flags that hang off the edges of the tag so that they are even with the tag.
Note that I arrange my flags in a staggered fashion to fit more of them on to the tag and suggest movement but you might want to arrange them in a straight row, like on the bunting ribbon.
Sew the top of the flags to the tag using the sewing machine and a contrasting thread color, such as black. Stamp the sentiment on to the bottom of the tag.
Add a jute hanger and you are done! How easy is that? Mix and match patterns and colors from your stash of fabrics or even patterned papers to create your own version of these bunting flag tags. I liked the idea of using fabric with paper since it adds a textile element.
These were so fun to make, I couldn't stop at just one version. While I had all my supplies out, I tried my hand at a holiday theme...
For these, I created a dye bath of Rit Dye in Dark Brown and water and dyed the tags to give them a deep, grungy appearance. I added stamped muslin so that the sentiment would show up against the dark background, Sweet hand dyed holiday bunting tags! And yet another hand dyed version...
I couldn't resist breaking out my Sizzix BigShot machine and Caged Bird die to create these adorable bird themed tags. Did you notice I used the same scraps?
