I love using what I have to create something completely different to use for home decorating. Several years ago I used a Shoji Screen in my apartment as a practical room divider.
The screen had three panels and had rice paper between the small pieces of thin wood sticks to create smaller grids. I am sure you may have seen something similar or maybe you have or had one of these...
To revamp my screen. I took off the hinges, remove the rice paper and some of the wood sticks to create random larger shapes. I then backed the shapes with patterned paper to match the room's colors. A quick coat of paint and a coordinating dry brush coat and viola!
They take up a lot of room on otherwise bare walls. I always thought they would be great to showcase photos as well.

I have one of these that I packed to move just yesterday. You've got me thinking about replacing the paper with something more interesting, though I might need it as a divider still!
